AIG UNITED GUARANTY INTRODUCES INTERACTIVE PREPURCHASE COUNSELING DVD IN SPANISH

Option Created to Reach More Hispanic First-Time Home Buyers

GREENSBORO, NC— AIG United Guaranty,1 whose affiliate companies provide mortgage guaranty insurance, private education loan default insurance, and other financial services to the mortgage industry, has added an interactive DVD in Spanish to its prepurchase counseling program for first-time Hispanic home buyers.

“Research shows that Hispanic consumers rely on television media – rather than newspapers, magazines, or the Internet – for most of the information they gather on financial, legal, and other important matters,” said Frank Ruelas, director–Emerging Markets with AIG United Guaranty. “With this in mind, we developed a DVD that reflects to the way these first-time borrowers prefer to learn.”
Created in 1994 as part of AIG United Guaranty’s growing affordable housing efforts, The Road to Home Ownership® program has provided materials and counseling to more than 125,000 minority and underserved home buyers, enabling them to own their own homes.

The Hispanic DVD version of The Road to Home Ownership is AIG United Guaranty’s latest addition to its series of Web-based and print prepurchase training materials. The course is also available in English and Spanish printed participant’s manuals and online in English, Spanish, and Chinese. The DVD features the following:

  • A separate chapter for each home-buying step. The DVD presents the home buying process in distinct segments, and dramatizes the borrowers’ growing awareness of how the process works. A recap of the points made appears at the end of each chapter.
  • Interactive format.  The DVD uses a stop-and-learn format, with menu options – similar to movies on DVD – that allow the user to stop the action, move within the program, and resume in-progress chapters.

  • Combined action and learning.  Viewers receive a mix of action and static information with voice-over narration.

  • An “outreach” introduction.  Actors depict a U.S. Hispanic household, and introduce – and then dispel – the myths about home buying and home ownership.

  • A “next step” for each segment.  To boost the interactive teaching function of the DVD, require specific action by the participants during – and at the end of – each “film” segment or chapter.
